One can work within the current system, I suppose, to bring about change in this area. But the entrenched progressives have made any change in method effectively impossible.

That is why the best logical step is school choice leading to an eventual free market. Universal education vouchers, which Christie supports, is a bad way to introduce a good principle - parental school choice. But that will at least establish parental involvement, eroding the power of the establishment.

I'm not sure that it is any harder to start a private school than other types of businesses. I think over time private schools will proliferate under universal vouchers, forcing enough competition onto the public schools to at least open the door to competing theoretical educational methods.

That's the best we can hope for under Christie. The worst is that the entrepreneurial spirit can be crushed by the voucher method of funding which leaves the state in control. In the end, Christie may end up saving and strengthening the government's school monopoly, and for that reason I share your frustration.

Thanks for stopping by. It...A fellow New Jersey advocate of Objectivism! It's disheartening watching and reading about Governor Christie. He's incredibly brave for standing up to the state teacher's union and their "we need to be entrenched dictators to be effective" mentality. But as long as he doesn't make it as easy as possible for individuals to start private schools or homeschool, he can only cause more harm.

And the complete lack of discussion of the quality of education in the current "debate" is depressing, including no discussion of: pedagogical principles, curriculum, novels to read, the importance of hierarchy, conceptualizing and delimiting subject matter, etc. Everyone accepts that education is wonderful today, if only there was more money spent, more computers, more homework, more state testing, boatloads more disconnected, unintegrated, non-essentialized information for students to be stuffed with...Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
