For now, everyone still accepts on some level that we have these basic individual rights. Notice that the government must still justify why it should infringe on our rights to speech, property, pursuit of happiness, liberty, and lives. Few politicians or intellectuals actually deny openly that we have these rights. They might just say we need to "balance" them with "social needs" so everyone can enjoy their rights "equally," or some such rationalization.

The question is, how much time is "a long way?"principled perspectiveshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06502754865268315342noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5495065931245897039.post-38289717459427979402016-12-06T14:37:54.512-05:002016-12-06T14:37:54.512-05:00I believe this is an example of what you mean when...I believe this is an example of what you mean when you say we're still a long way away from any day of reckoning: gvt. still doesn't assume first claim on the nation's wealth. If it ever does, that will make that day substantially more likely. Same with a first claim on peoples' speech, pursuit of happiness, liberty and lives. We're a long way from any day of reckoning because of the issue of first claim: gvt. asserts no first claim on any of these, nor, perhaps, on other things. Maybe other issues and things are also still protecting our enjoyment of our rights, despite the cultural mystic, altruist, collectivist philosophy and the gvt's policies, for many decades, consistent with that philosophy.Mike Kevittnoreply@blogger.com
